The Second
and Third grades are participating in some exciting
activities and field trips this year. We have a terrific
outdoor adventure planned at Malibu Creek State Park
. We will be exploring the native population of the
Santa Monica Mountains and will be doing our usual guided
nature tour on one of our local trails. Our Social Studies
units will include an exploration of downtown Los Angeles
and a trip to the Los Angeles County Fair.
Our Social Studies curriculum, History Alive, is a big hit with the students. We have been "acting out" historic events in class with the support of excellent visual and audio aids. Additionally, geography lessons are an integral part of our weekly Social Studies program.
In Science,
our unit on "Living Things" has included many
hands-on experiments as part of our program. We have
created comfortable habitats for pill bugs, planted
a garden, built our own food chain, and grown mold.
Our Science units also include "The Moon and the
Sun", "Energy and Change", and"
Machines in Motion".
The students have created some great writing projects. Thanks to our writing program, we leave no writer behind. This wonderful step-by-step process facilitates creative and interested writers, as well as providing an easy road map for the development of writing skills.
We have some interesting literature units planned as well. The novels are assigned according to the student's ability, but the program also includes books with a very high interest level.
The Second and Third Grade Math curriculum is a combination of a traditional math continuum and Everyday Math. Our goal is to keep math interesting and fun. The program offers experiential activities such as creating a small business where merchandise is priced and sold, and making our own maps to scale. This math environment gives the students an opportunity to participate in many hands-on activities that make working with numbers enjoyable. All math instuction is individualized to meet the needs of each student.
