Elementary Classes K-6

We believe that every child should be educated to his or her fullest potential. All curricular materials have been selected based on the combination of basic skills, enrichment, and acceleration. The textbooks for each subject are in accordance with the California State Framework and are the foundation for instruction. Research and enrichment are key elements. Activities to develop critical thinking skills and cooperative learning skills are ongoing.

All students are provided appropriate and adequate opportunities to:
• demonstrate a core base knowledge in all areas of learning;
• exhibit responsibility as self-directed learners;
• demonstrate positive self-concepts with a sense of social awareness.

READING

Designed to get students actively involved in literature and learning, our reading program combines a student-centered approach to the study of literature with a sharp focus on the development of practical reading, writing, and comprehension. Reading programs utilized in primary, middle, and upper grades incorporate phonics/decoding skills, vocabulary development, leveled reading selections, and the integration of award winning literature to create successful readers. WRITING

The writing program at SAGE Academy fully and seamlessly integrates each of the language arts, helping students experience and appreciate the connections between writing, listening, speaking, and reading. Our program encourages students to build real-world skills they need to become independent, confident, successful writers. The program employs a define-explain approach and an extensive selection of practice and apply exercises, so students gain valuable skills in grammar, usage, and mechanics that all writers need to write effectively. By successfully combining an active, student centered approach, with step by step teacher guidance and instruction, our program helps student authors explore the joy of writing with a sense of excitement and discovery.

MATH

The goal of SAGE Academy’s comprehensive mathematics curriculum is to empower our students to understand mathematical content far beyond basic arithmetic. Building upon the basic skills foundation for each grade level, our K-6 mathematics program encourages students to explore more of the mathematics spectrum by investigating data gathering and analysis, probability, geometry, patterns, and algebra. Mathematics is integrated into other subject areas and becomes part of the ongoing classroom routines, outdoor play, and spare transitional moments that occur everyday. TOP

SOCIAL STUDIES

SAGE Academy's social studies program focuses on history, reading skills, critical thinking, and test preparation. It engages students with real people and diverse cultures while exploring the past, present and future. It features:
• In-depth exploration that integrates strands such as history and geography;
• Reading and lesson support to help students learn important concepts;
• Ancillary activities including field trips, literature connections, and technology quests. TOP

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is a vital part of our ever-changing world. At SAGE Academy, our students receive a well-rounded education that includes a technological emphasis. Through the collaborative efforts of our full-time Technology Director and teachers, the entire curriculum is integrated using computer resources. These skills provide our students with a long-term advantage in their future educational experiences, and prepare them for a world that requires technological fluency. All students meet with the computer teacher 3 times each week. TOP

ART

The Visual Arts program at SAGE Academy is designed to encourage creative expression with a basis in technical skills. The students experience a wide variety of mediums (drawing, painting, clay, etc.) at all grade levels, and are exposed to different styles of artwork through books, videos, projects, and field trips. Because of our location, we are fortunate to be in close proximity to a wide variety of art resources and public art, and we take advantage of that to gain first hand visual experiences. TOP

MUSIC

SAGE Academy’s Music program offers a combination of the musical history/theory and student participation. Our Music teacher incorporates dramatic play, singing, rhythm with instruments and movement, and child centered performances into the curriculum. Special guests and field trips bring to life the gifts music has to offer. TOP

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

SAGE Academy's daily PE program emphasizes the development of social skills, gross and fine motor skills, and sportsmanship with particular emphasis on the interaction among classmates in cooperative and competitive activities. Activities are presented in a sequential manner; each learned skill is the foundation for more refined movements in higher grades. A variety of activities will be offered, such as ball skills, tumbling, jump rope, and dance movement. A fitness component will be included at each grade level, including stretching, strength training, and cardiovascular endurance. Our goal is for students to understand the value of exercise as it is incorporated into the entire educational process. TOP

COMMUNITY SERVICE

We see community service as a vital part of life at SAGE Academy. Each grade will take on various service projects throughout the year. The goal of the program is to teach children to look beyond themselves to instill in them a spirit of giving and to help them feel connected to the greater community. TOP

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Our After School Program is available M-F, from 3:15-6PM. Students will be cared for by a SAGE Academy Teacher. Initially, students will be supervised as they do their homework. Snack will be served, and both indoor and outdoor playtime will be provided. Various club options will be offered during the year, such as Hip Hop, Spanish, Gymnastics, and Basketball. TOP
